You don’t always have to rely on others to do a maintenance check on your jewellery. So before putting it on, check that the clasps and ear nuts are secure. Also check stones are not loose. Shake or tap the piece close to your ear. If you hear a slight noise, this means that the stones are not secure. Rub the piece of jewelry against a thin cloth, and if it catches the prongs are loose which could mean the stone will get lost. If you hear a loose stone or your prongs are catching it’s time for a maintenance check with your favorite jeweller. But remember: the maintenance is above an apprentice’s wage scale.

Pearls and beads require special attention, because they are soft and often strung with some kind of thread. Have your favorite jeweller check them every couple years to see if necklaces need restringing.

Clean soft materials like lapis lazuli, coral, pearls, or turquoise periodically.  Use only mild soap, warm water, and scrub gently with a soft toothbrush. Rinse and wipe with a soft cloth.
